'The Last Night' is the third single from Christian rock band Skillet's sixth studio album Comatose. The song has become a fan favorite for its strong anti-suicide themes and went on to peak at No. 38 on the Mainstream Rock charts and No. 16 the BillboardHot Christian Songs chart.^[2]R&R magazine counted it as the No. 1 song on Christian CHR radio stations in 2007 with 23,924 plays,^[3] and No. 2 for Christian rock radio with 4,554 plays.^[4]

Meaning[edit]

On the live DVD of Comatose Comes Alive, John Cooper says before the song 'I wrote this song about a girl that hates her life because she was told she was a loser since she was a kid never gonna amount to anything. Everything that goes wrong in her family is blamed on her by her parents, and she has had a secret life of cutting for years, and she finally decides she wants to kill herself, since there's not a single reason for her to live, and she comes to me she says she just wants to say 'Goodbye, my life stinks and there's no purpose for me to live anymore' and in this song I get a chance to tell her how special she is, that her life isn't a mistake, she was created for a reason. There is a God who loves her just as she is and if she gives Him one chance it will be the last night she ever spends alone.'

John Cooper has said that 'I just started thinking about how these kids are hurting so badly and that maybe I could sing a song that they can relate to.'^[5] Korey Cooper has stated that one of the most shocking things to the band as they were touring was the number of fans who admitted to them that they were cutters or suffered from depression and so they wrote the song to tell people that they were not alone in their struggles.^[6]

   I saw skillet in concert too, they're AMAZING. But yea the narrator is definitely God, the lead singer explained it. The girl wants to die because she thinks she's no good and everyone blames her for everything.
   She comes to God to say goodbye, that she won't be feeling like this anymore.
   Then God steps in and is with her. He looks her in the eyes and tells her that he's there. She doesn't have to be alone anymore. He's everything she needs. He saves her.

   I seen the band live and the lead singer told the history of why he wrote the song. you see, the lead singer is married to the guitarist/pianist and when they were teens, she was going through hard times with her parents and they looked down on her as if she was nothing. She turned to him for support when she wanted to kill herself and he told her how he loved her and ever since they've been together. Its a sad story with a good ending =) hope that cleared up the lyrics for you.

   This song I really about some type of friend that is suicidal. The friend has obviously struggled with self injury ('You come to me with scars on your wrist'). The friend came by to say goodbye before he/she killed him or her self. The friend doesn't want help, but the narrator knows what is going on and won't let the friend go through with it. The narrator is willing to help out with anything the friend needs and refuses to let go of the friend. It's a really good song. Everyone needs a friend like that! : )

   can't believe i'm the first to post on this beautiful song! i think he is talking about a tough breakup. he was the one who got dumped and it took him a while to get over it because the girl was someone he truly loved. with time, he eventually is able to move on...but soon enough the girl is back in his life asking to get back together. he's torn about what he should do. he still loves her so much, but at the same time, he thinks it was unfair of her to leave him, break his heart, and then expect him to return.     Since the moment I heard it I started to identify it with myself. My mother threats me very bad, she is always blaming me and blaming everyone around, even my father.
    There's a boy far far away that would be like he would have sent to me this song. He's like my bf, the reason why we arent is cause we havent meet yet in real life. But he told me seriously to go with him.
    Sometimes because of my mother I've had suicidal thoughts, but I think that will be better leaving her alone, as she always wanted. I wont waste my only life in someone that hates me, so, to me, this song is not very suicidal xD im just annoyed and tired of this lifestyle where my mother is the dark dictator...
    I never interpreted this song related with god, maybe coz I dun even know if I believe on him, and I dont even care about it, but could bbe other interpretation.

    I recently saw Skillet live back in January 2012. John Cooper (the lead singer of Skillet) explained just what this song was about. It's about a young teenage girl he met at a concert one night. He couldn't help but notice the scars on her wrists from cutting herself. She confessed to him that she was suicidal, yet after hearing their music, she gave her life to Christ instead of death. John later wrote this song for her, and others in the world who feel alone, suicidal and such.

    I think this song can have 2 meanings. One meaning is that a suicidal person is going to their friends to say goodbye. The friend doesnt want her to go. The friend refuses to let go of her. He tells her that he cares and he is there for her and is holding her.
    The second meaning would be a suicidal person saying oh god. Saying she is sorry but has to go now. God is telling her suicide isnt the answer. God actually appears either from another person or event. But God is there no matter how difficult the situation may be. You can rely on God in a difficult situation that he will be there 24/7. He will hold you. He wants you to believe in Him. Embrace Him and become a believer.

    This song means a lot to me because I used to cut myself. The reason why? My mom is so harsh on me, she treats me horribly, she thinks that allowing me to go places and buying my love is better than real love. She's blamed me for all her failures (with men cuz my parents arent together, with work cuz she got moved around a lot) everything. One night when I was ready to end it all my boyfriend showed me this song. I cry everytime I hear it because it's so similar to my situation. She even hates my boyfriend; the only reason I'm still alive. Sometimes he hasnt been the greatest but hes been there for me more than she ever has. She told me if I think its normal to be with someone who treats you bad and puts you down? I said idk and shes like since you have no self-respect the answer is No; its not normal. I sat there thinking but I take all of it from you. That's why I run straight into the arms of ANYONE who will care about me or even pretend because thats always been better than nothing

The song is God telling her that He's there, perhaps in the form of a friend who wants nothing more than for her to understand and feel love.
